Bedford"s Victorian Pilgrim SEHT -p William Hale White in Context
This study of William Hale White (1831â€"1913) was prompted by a reading of nineteenth century novels categorised among the literature of faith and doubt which nonetheless exhibited a surprisingly strong attachment to faith. Hale White, better known by his literary pseudonym ?Mark Rutherford?, is often included in surveys of such texts as a representative of Protestant Dissent. In his case particularly there seemed reason to believe that being typecast as a doubter obscured more about his life than it revealed, an impression reinforced by a review of the sources used in previous critical studies. The existence of four substantial biographies might have suggested there was little more to be said, until it became clear that some significant aspects of his life had not been fully explored or adequately set in context.
